Shaking Off the Dust: Releasing Judgment & Healing Religious Trauma
“If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that house or town.” (Matthew 10:14) This was powerful instruction given by Jesus — who was incredibly loving and kind — to his disciples about what to do when facing a hostile or unreceptive environment. And it had everything to do with who is wearing the shoes, not about judging others at all.

For a long time, many have read this passage as a statement about other people — a symbol of judgment or walking away in frustration or even derision, even though in other scriptures we are told NOT to judge others. (Romans 14:10-12; Matthew 7:1,2; Romans 12:19)
But when we look closer at the spiritual mechanics of momentum, we realize something profound: Shaking the ‘dust off your sandals’ is never about them. It is entirely about us and continuing on without getting entrapped or slowed down. How many times have you replayed a conversation in your head, or held onto hurtful words that someone threw at you like mud on a wall? When you decide to “shake it off,” (hmmm, do I hear a song there?) you free yourself of past hurts, and you are able to continue on without distraction and in peace of mind.
1. Refusing to Get Stuck in the Mud
Dust and dirt represent the residues of this world — hostility, rejection, toxic words, and the heavy weight of unhealed environments. If you don't intentionally “clear your shoes,” that dust turns into thick mud. It weighs down your stride, clogs your peace, and tries to entrap you in a place you have already outgrown. Shaking it off is a protective boundary for your own soul, ensuring that the dirt thrown at you doesn’t stick to your identity. Emotionally and spiritually, know that whether people accept the opportunities given to them, you have done what you were supposed to do.
2. The Power of the Forward Lean
If you picture someone naturally shaking dirt from their shoe, the physical posture requires something beautiful: you have to lift your foot backward to flick the residue away, which automatically forces your body to lean forward. That is the dual meaning of a spiritual boundary. The moment you decide to cleanly release the chaos behind you, you are simultaneously bracing your weight to step powerfully, decisively forward into the fresh territory God has prepared for you. You aren't standing on the path arguing with the mud; you are adjusting your stride for momentum forward.
God knows what’s going on. “You are blessed when they insult you and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of me. Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you." (Matthew 5:11,12)
3. Guarding the Spiritual Journey
You are living on earth for a reason, and you have a great purpose to fulfill. You are a spark off the Divine Flame with a built-in "God-Spot" meant to hear His voice directly. This is the true heart of becoming the Christian mystic — unlearning fear, moving past religious trauma, and stepping into your innate intuitive gifts and activating the greater supernatural ones when Father offers them to us. When we refuse to let the heavy mud of toxic environments anchor us, our hands can become His hands, and our voice, His Voice, to ease suffering and manifest miracles amid the world shift. Prayer transforms and changes things, and a heart of love and faith offer the brightest of prayers — not a heart of judgment or resentment.
“Therefore, we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? (Hebrews 13:6)
“Let your graciousness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy — dwell on these things. (Philippians 4:5-8)
Each of us has a unique calling - do not let anything not of love cling to you to slow you down. Keep your shoes light and confidently step into your calling, because God’s Love has got you and the future is incredibly bright. [END] Tiffany Snow (c)2026
