Pope Francis - A Humble, Open Challenge

A heart that is humble and ministers to the needs of others offers to touch the heart beyond any religion. Here are some of last words of Pope Francis from his Easter 2025 address to the world:

The life of Pope Francis offers a humble, open challenge to us all - beyond religion.

(1). “There can be no peace without freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of expression and respect for the views of others.”

(2). “Sisters and brothers, especially those of you experiencing pain and sorrow, your silent cry has been heard…

(3). “Thanks to Christ – crucified and risen from the dead – hope does not disappoint! Spes non confundit! (cf. Romans 5:5). That hope is not an evasion, but a challenge; it does not delude, but empowers us.”

As a follower of Christ, I have appreciated the interfaith message, compassion and commitment of Pope Francis throughout his career. Pope Francis was one of those rare leaders to openly challenge all people to reassess their own responsibility to love and respect one another, to embrace all people regardless of wealth, status, culture, ethnicity or identity, as all beloved children of God.

He tried to renew and restructure several traditional constructs of his chosen house of faith and fellowship to align better with the heart of God. In this, he was successful in some places, and not so good in others. But even in this we can identify with him, knowing that we as humans are imperfect, and don’t always see the whole picture. Yet, we are still beloved. God chooses to look at only the love we show, if we just ask. All else is forgiven, the door has been opened, and whether people recognize it or not, the life and death of Jesus changed everything, going backwards and forwards in time.

Now the world is suffering through waves of hardship and turmoil. We are living during a time of world shift that has been prophesied for thousands of years. With this comes many opportunities to reveal what we are allowing to determine our life choices and whom we are following - love or fear, good or evil. The promise of God’s Kingdom on earth is soon to be realized, the original promise given in the Garden of Eden must be fulfilled.

(4). “…the Lord now lives forever. He fills us with the certainty that we too are called to share in the life that knows no end, when the clash of arms and the rumble of death will be heard no more. Let us entrust ourselves to him, for he alone can make all things new (Revelation. 21:5)!”

May the spark of God placed within us be fanned into an ever brighter flame, reflecting faith and spirit as we strive, like Pope Francis and others of full faith, to appreciate but not follow any human of flesh and bones, but He who the Son of God himself was pointing to, the Heavenly Father, who whispers hope, comfort and love to all who have ears to listen.

May the example of the life of Pope Francis be a challenge for each of us to humbly and fully immerse into the call of the Holy Work that God has placed within our hearts, to strive each day to give our all - physically, emotionally and spiritually, to our last breath. And within all examples of lives of self-sacrifice, may we see the greater example of Jesus Christ himself, who gave his life willingly because it was asked of him.

Even when we are mistreated, marginalized, derided and discounted - even when it’s hard - may we each accept the peace of faith that goes beyond words, as a beloved child of God, and to fully accomplish our work, with love and joy in the midst of suffering. END 2025 (C)Tiffany Snow
