Does Prayer Time Out? The Truth is Heartbreaking

How to Hear God and Stay Connected

For those who know me and my life’s work, I live with a foot in both worlds. It’s a blessed and awesome place to be, yet filled with unique challenges of just being human while receiving Divine downloads. I have one ear to heaven, and one to earth. And each day I start with prayer, as many of us do. Then it dawned on me.

Last night while speaking with The Called and Commissioned (our online prayer warrior group) I had a thought, and ran out of words looking for the answer. In fact, I didn’t know how to put it in words. The silence was thick, and hard to navigate. Silently, my brain was doing leaps and bounds. It was about my lifeline, about prayer. If I begin each day in prayer, does that mean my previous prayer ended? When? How does that happen? Really, does prayer time-out?

If We Start Our Day with Prayer, When Does It End?

So, since I had already invited God into my day, why do I have to connect again? I feel His glow, and bask in the unconditional love, and always feel His Presence, and I know He never withdraws from me. So why, after establishing that connection, would I have to pray more than once? And why does it seem that sometimes His answers are immediate and other times I wait so long? Here are the answers Father gave me, and it may change everything with how you connect with God. It did for me.

Prayer times out. But, not like you think. It never times out from The Big Guy’s side - it is on ours. This is how it works: when we actively connect and talk to Father, we are sharing what’s on our hearts, and also actively listening. That’s the rub right there - Actively Talking, Actively Listening. When we start our prayers, those things are our focus. How that changes is when we get distracted. We have stopped listening, and even though He may still be talking, the communication of prayer is gone. It ends.

And that’s ok. We are imperfect humans, and we are living through the first waves of Armageddon, and it’s a stressful time. We have families, we have jobs, we are students, and we all have critical things we need to do. This lack of ability for even the faithful to remain fully connected is expected, and deeply understood by the other side. And there is also the real possibility of routines becoming an unconscious habit, instead of special times of mindfulness and focus. Prayer, on His side and with how God participates with it, is always active, alive, and accessible. On our side, it is a bit different.

Discerning the difference between receiving the help we need and have asked God about, is limited by our ability to hear the answer. God doesn’t have limits, He doesn’t hold back anything from those with a searching heart. He created within us a God-spot only His Spirit can fill - each a spark off of His Flame. He built us to receive.

It’s kind of like this: His voice is the radio station, and we are hardwired with a radio receiver. He transmits 24/7, and our ability to clearly hear Him has to do with how we are tuning in. Life gets in the way, and adds noise to the frequency, but mindful listening brings Him back in sync, in tune with our own ability to hear Him. We can hear Him again when we actively dial out of the static, it’s a choice we need to participate in.

How Answers to Prayer Might Be Delayed

God is always desiring to speak with us, to guide us, to help us become the true potential He created us to be. He wants us to remember who we are, and who He is, and to participate in the miraculous life that happens when we work together with Him. All things are possible, and truly, the miracles of it I see all the time.

So, why have I found myself waiting on God for answers that seemed to take so long? We have a mostly audible connection, I actually hear Him. Yet why the times of silence? I do know sometimes it’s because I really don’t want to hear the answer - I shut down from wanting to receive because it may be an answer or guidance that is difficult to hear. So that’s me asking, and then turning off the radio before I can hear the answer. Sad.

At other times the answer to prayer may be delayed because there are other people with free will involved, so God is waiting in their choices before the best move forward can be given. God answers prayer in 3 ways: “Yes,” “Not Yet,” and “I’ve got a better idea than that.” And He always gives special details beyond that, as well. I have seen that even when I ask about things that it is not for me to know, He will tell me so, so I don’t keep waiting. He is really good about answering. But we will only hear Him if we are take the time to listen.

I want to share a couple of poignant conversations with Him that make me laugh (now) every time I think about them:

Me: “Father, why aren’t I getting an answer on this? It’s on my mind so much and it’s stressing me out.”

Father: “Yes, I know. But you’ve only been thinking about it, you haven’t asked me yet.”

Here is another one. “Dear Heavenly Father, I feel overwhelmed. Learning all this tech stuff to expand Your info during this world shift, I’m just not smart enough. My brain is melting!”

Father: “Yes, I see that, and I can help you. However, you don’t stop to listen to me in the middle of complaining and meltdown. Less talking, more listening.”

So there you have it - massive in its ripple effect, simple on the surface:

(1). Talking: Humans need to buy out time (not just find it - life gets too busy) to pray multiple times a day, because we need to ask God (activating free will) and not just thinking about stuff and assuming. God isn’t going to help us unless we ask. He doesn’t force anyone to hear Him, even when He’s got better ideas. This is the true meaning of active prayer.

(2). Listening: Prayer time is communication - the interaction of talking and listening - which means that at least for a few moments, we are not only sharing, but focused and seeking to hear. We aren’t going to listen - even when we have prayed for answers - if our mind is too distracted, cloudy or rushing off to do the next thing. We are the ones who time out prayer when our focus moves.

Being Present & Actively Listening

This problem is a basic communication issue that we see examples of all the time: a spouse not actively asking their mate for help assuming the other person just knows and will do it; or when a person asks something of you but isn’t really listening and interrupts while you are still speaking. If we want to help a relationship grow, whether between people or with Almighty God, we need to be present in the moment, with focus and intention. Talking and listening. Double effort on the listening! Setting aside time to do it, renewing the connection on your side over and over again, to listen.

So, the communication started by prayer never ends on Father’s side. Heartbreakingly, it ends on ours, when life’s inevitable interferences affect our ability to hear Him. And making a habit of prayer, truly living in the place of having one ear to heaven and one ear to earth, requires us to multiply the times of mindfully disconnecting in the midst of all distractions to actively listen to the whispers of God. He is always connected to us, and actively yearns for us to share our thoughts and concerns, and to bless what we are passionate about and guide us forward in passion and purpose.
