God had a perfect plan of balance in place when he created male and female in the world. It is a shared interlocking of different purposes that support and make the complete whole. Is the color blue better than the color yellow? While one may have a personal preference, they are still unique unto themselves, although they have the shared aspect of being colors. This is similar to the roles of male and female. Each has a different plan inherent with their sexual attributes.
God Also Has Feminine Qualities
But comparing men and women in strengths and weaknesses is like comparing colors, or “apples to oranges” - each has unique qualities while also sharing similarities. God does not think less of women than men. We are each a spark of the Divine Flame, spirit created from Spirit, love from Love. “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image…so God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them…and God blessed them…” (Genesis 1:26-28)
In fact, God himself shares many qualities that a human woman does; of being tender, nurturing and wanting to keep us well fed, healed and clothed, and desiring to communicate with us about all the little details in our lives, and hug us often! Yet, God also has the strength, protective and supportive qualities than we often associate with being male. Most people refer to God as male, and as a father figure, and this is what Christ did as well, which also reflects a desire to accept Love’s leadership or authority in our lives. Why authority?
The Misunderstanding of What Authority Means
The Divine authority given to males in the scriptures continues to be misunderstood and is often used as an excuse to treat women as inferior simply because they were born female. This is not how God views it at all. In a perfect world, male supports female and in turn, female supports male, creating a complete and full circle. Think of it this way - can two people go through a door first? It is not wise or efficient. But if one goes and opens the door first, holding it open for the other to step through, they can both go through successfully, both wins.
Some may argue that the one going through the door first is the more privileged; while others may see the one having the door opened for them is the one given more honor. In God’s eyes, it is neither. He knows our spirit, and that we have each lived many lives as both male and female, and whatever body we are born into during this life has been given an inherent role. There is an idiom “Too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the soup,” basically meaning when too many people are involved in trying to do the same thing, the final result will not be good. It is best to have someone in charge. So how does God say this authority should be used?
Let us look at the example of Christ. Jesus was the first creation God ever made with free will separate from himself. First-begotten, first-born son, Jesus was created in heaven then later transferred to the womb of a human female to be born a man to fulfill the promises of God. Such a unique being, yet he was also under the authority of another. Every man is - to make the best decisions for those they are responsible for, they must listen to the authority above them. Jesus said, “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.” (John 6:38). And he followed it perfectly. That is the Divine plan of headship - it doesn’t stop with the word of a human male figure. “But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” (1 Cor. 11:3)
Taking the Lead in Helping Others
So, the chain of command does not rest idle upon the head of males, they are under authority too, and they must respect and honor that there is a plan and a word higher than their own thoughts and ways, and they are to humbly seek this leadership in all their choices. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8,9) His ways are always the best for all those involved, and for the highest good. “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God.” (1John 4:18)
Proper use of authority is to take the lead in helping others. Jesus shut down a squabble that was occurring with those following him, saying “…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:43-45). This is the true weight and responsibility of authority. It is self-sacrifice of our own will to listen to another, do the highest good for all involved, and that is the true balance - giving our strength, nurturing and caring for one another, the earth and all creation upon it. This is God’s plan for authority in all forms - marriage, parenthood, roles in public office and priesthood, etc.
How to Know the Mind of God
How do you answer to this higher authority? Prayer is powerful. Knowing the mind of God and his core motivation of Love through our personal experience, divinely honed intuition, reading scripture and communicating with him will always help you verify what is of him, and love, and what is not. If it’s not of love, it’s not of God and not for you. Be willing to give time for answers to come, especially on big decisions. He will answer you. He can guide you. Are you sensitive to his leadings? Do you recognize his authority? Do you really believe he has the best in mind for you and your loved ones? Test it out. “Taste and see that God is good…” (Psalm 34:8)
No matter our gender or place in society, God is our greatest authority. And when God’s authority is in conflict with the authority of mankind, we must choose God as ruler over anyone else. This is what is meant here, “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)
When Authority is Misused
So, when there are those who misuse their headship or authority by acts against love, they are breaking the line of command, and their authority over good decisions come into question. Then what do we do? For example, if a husband is unsupportive or abusive to his wife or children, she now has all authority to step in as head and protect herself and the children, even if that means leaving the marriage to do so. In all things we personally answer to God. Our spirit ultimately stands before our Heavenly Father and our life review reflects those choices, in which we will also feel and experience ourselves the ripple of how we treated others. This includes how our choices have affected others, and any authority we have over others. Will we treat others as God asks? “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34) “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” (Romans 12:10)
We can become an instrument of God by reflecting his love in all we do, including taking care of those under our authority, and humbly following the authority we accept over us. So now you can see more clearly that when God made male and female and put the guidance of authority in place, it was to be a blessing for us and a balancing out of responsibility. “…in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them…and God blessed them…” (Genesis 1:26-28) END 2023 (c) Tiffany Snow
